About the Unit/ Centre

Inland Fisheries Unit is working under the Zonal Agricultural Research Station, V C Farm, Mandya. Fisheries Scientists are involved in Research, Teaching and Extension activities. Conducted several experiments and developed fish farming technologies to the farming community viz.,

  1. Catla, Rohu, Common carp (3:3:4) polyculture technology, which can yield 2500-4000 kg / ha. / year with cost benefit ratio of 1:2.35
  2. Stunted fish fingerlings production technology for saline soil ponds, useful for increasing productivity of seasonal ponds, which can retain the water for 6-8 months.
  3. Press-mud compost and bio-digester liquid production and utilization in fish farming.
  4. Fish seed rearing and fish farming technologies for saline and alkaline soil ponds.
  5. Developed different fish farming systems such as mono-culture and poly culture of fish farming with different species combination for saline / alkaline soil ponds viz., mono culture of Indian catfish, poly culture of Catfish with Catla and Rohu, mono culture of Pangassius fish, poly culture of Pangassius fish with Catla & Rohu, Poly culture of freshwater Prawn with Catla & Rohu and Grass carp & Common carp polyculture system.
  6. Developed method of Fish seed rearing in cement / earthen pond for 60-90 days and production of fingerlings.
  7. Method of fish seed rearing in Hapa (Similar to inverted mosquito net type of net) and fish fingerlings production for utilization of natural water bodies.
  8. Technology of fish farming in Integrated Farming System by utilizing animal and agricultural wastes.
  9. Developed small-scale Ornamental fish rearing model for women farmers to enhance their income.
  10. Use of Sugarcane bagasse and Bamboo poles for the production of planktonic film to enhance the fish production.
  11. Developing Freshwater Pearl farming technologies and conducting trainings.
  12. Fish fingerlings Production; Production of quality fish fingerlings of Catla, Rohu, Common carp varieties and supplying to farmers for the enhancement of fish production.

  • Addressing of Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture issues of zonal / regional agro-ecological systems through the network of fisheries research and extension activities.
